Veterinary Medicine Study Abroad

I traveled to Australia for a study abroad, where I learned about animals endemic to Australia and more about veterinary medicine applied to these different species. During this study abroad, I widened my experience and knowledge from companion animals to exotics that I would never see in America. I also completed a lot of volunteer work while in Australia, so I could give back to the community I was working with.

On the medical side, I was able to successfully tube feed opossums and rabbits, something that takes great care due to potential for aspirating. Additionally, I learned to triage and intake patients, making sure I ask the appropriate questions and advocate for all patients coming into the hospital.

My responsibilities included daily feeding, collecting eggs from the chickens and ducks, bottle-feeding baby goats, and ensuring good animal health and well-being. Most importantly, I made a lifelong friend in Katherine Harrison, the owner of the farm, whose guidance and warmth towards me will be forever appreciated.
